Linda Brown is staff chaplain and Coordinator of Spiritual Health Services for Truman Medical Centers on Hospital Hill in Kansas City, Missouri.

A former classroom teacher and university professor, Brown is developer and coauthor of several norm-referenced tests including the Test of Nonverbal Intelligence, Fourth Edition; the Behavior Rating Profile, Third Edition; the Adaptive Behavior Inventory; the Index of Personality Characteristics; the Self-Esteem Index; and the Test of Early Socioemotional Development. She is also coauthor of the book A Consumer’s Guide to Tests in Print, Second Edition, and author of Assessing the Socioemotional Development and Intervention Needs of Students. She has developed and normed tests for use in foreign countries, including the Perfil de Evaluación del Comportamiento (Mexico and Spain), the Test di Valutazione del Comportamento Adattivo nell’ Handicappato (Italy), the Test de Inteligencia No Verbal (Spain), and a Chinese edition of TONI.

Brown earned her Ph.D. degree from Kansas State University in 1974 and then served on the teaching and research faculties at The University of Texas at Austin and Purdue University. Prior to that she was a classroom teacher of students with emotional disorders, minimal brain dysfunction, and multiple physical, sensory, and intellectual disabilities. Among other professional leadership positions, Brown is past president of the International Council for Learning Disabilities

Brown answered a call into ministry and returned to seminary at Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri, graduating in 2003 with an MTS in pastoral care and theology. She pursued training in hospital chaplaincy and was Chaplain Resident at the Kansas City VA Medical Center and then at Saint Luke’s Hospital, both in Kansas City

Brown was honored in 2000 for her vision and fortitude in establishing Trinity Center as viable institution serving the homeless and indigent population of Austin. She was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation (1991) by The Honorable Ann W. Richards, Governor of Texas, for her commitment and dedication in providing for the welfare of persons with disabilities. She was one of 75 women elected to Leadership Texas (1987) for providing leadership in her community and her profession and was one of 100 women elected to Leadership America (1988) for her record of accomplishment in her community and her profession and for a demonstrated commitment to leadership and involvement with national and international issues. The International Council for Exceptional Children awarded Brown the Susan Phillips Gorin Award (1986) for her commitment, inspiration, and service as a role model to students; and the Texas Council for Exception Children bestowed the President’s Award (1983) on Brown for distinguished and dedicated service to the profession. She was also named one of the Outstanding Young Women of America (1978) for demonstrating enthusiasm, activity, and concern through achievements in her community and her profession.

Brown lives in Leavenworth, Kansas, where she grows herbs and heirloom roses and attends dog school with Layla. She is an advocate for the homeless and medically indigent, and volunteers her time as chaplain for the volunteer fire department and battered women’s center. She is Presiding Judge of the Ecclesiastical Trial Court for the Episcopal Dioceses of Kansas. At St. Paul’s Episcopal Church she was a member of the Vestry, chairing the Leadership Development Committee; she also coordinates the Lay Eucharistic Ministers and lectors for the church. Brown is treasurer of the Leavenworth County Democratic Central Committee.
