Friday Course Descriptions

Latino Teen Suicide Rate – Our Response

Speaker(s): Anna Marie Bellatin PhD

Time: Friday, July 13, 2007 at 1:30 pm

Length: 90 minutes

A federal survey released in 2006 revealed that Hispanic high school students attempt suicide at far higher rates than their white and black classmates. More than 11 percent of all Latino students — and 15 percent of Latino girls — said they had attempted suicide, according to the report issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The white and black rates were about 7.5 percent. This workshop will explore what is behind the numbers. The participants will also gain insight into culturally appropriate interventions for prevention and treatment.

Objectives:

  • To gain an understanding of the high incidence of risk facing Latino youth.
  • To gain insight into what is behind the high figures of suicide attempts for these youth.
  • To learn culturally appropriate interventions for prevention and treatment.
