Transforming Tragedy: Organ and Tissue Donation After Traumatic Death

Speaker(s): Sarah Oland

Time: Friday, July 13, 2007 at 3:30pm

Length: 90 minutes

This course will examine the impact organ, tissue and/or cornea donation can have on the way many families experience and remember the tragic loss of their loved one. Many families who unexpectedly lose a loved one will be offered the opportunity of donation shortly after the accident or death. We will examine the situations in which donation may be possible and the process that takes place. You will learn how donation creates meaning and legacy at a time when families are searching for this. Donor families will share their experiences with donation by telling their story, sharing excerpts from their recipient’s letters or what it was like to meet their loved ones recipient/s. You will also learn how to help donor families access follow up information about their donation. You will leave the program with an understanding of how donation can help transform the tragedy of a traumatic death into a memory of how their loved one gave life and continues to live on in others.
