Urban Schools and the Challenges and Traumas Students Face Daily Speaker(s): Bevelry C. Swinney Time: Friday, July 13, 2007 at 10:45 am Length: 90 minutes There are multiple hurdles urban children face that many who live in suburban America only read about occasionally. In working class and welfare recipient neighborhoods priorities are often on meeting basic survival needs for themselves and their siblings, with little quite time to focus on studies and disruptive extended families with limited appreciation for what it takes to be academically successful. School counselors are often not trained to deal with the social and psychological problems that students face, and this adds another challenge for educators and behavioral health professionals.
