Urban Schools and the Challenges and Traumas Students Face Daily

Speaker(s): Bevelry C. Swinney

Time: Friday, July 13, 2007 at 10:45 am

Length: 90 minutes

There are multiple hurdles urban children face that many who live in suburban America only read about occasionally.  In working class and welfare recipient neighborhoods priorities are often on meeting basic survival needs for themselves and their siblings, with little quite time to focus on studies and disruptive extended families with limited appreciation for what it takes to be academically successful.  School counselors are often not trained to deal with the social and psychological problems that students face, and this adds another challenge for educators and behavioral health professionals.

Gain a better understanding of:

  • demographics of the urban student (examples of typical student)
  • differences between living in urban areas and living in the suburbs (e.g. single parents, technology)
  • challenges some students face daily (examples)
  • availability of resources to address needs of urban students
  • what is needed and is there hope
