Coaching Boys Into Men/Champions Of Character – “Changing The Culture Of Youth Sports”

This workshop provides information on two programs currently underway in Johnson County, Kansas that share a common goal though the message of each is slightly different. In general both programs aim to foster positive changes in players’, parents’ and coaches’ attitudes regarding the true purpose of involvement in organized sports, and to work toward preventing an ever-escalating culture of inappropriate, abusive and violent behaviors on and off the field through awareness and education. Coaching Boys Into Men is specifically designed to provide coaches with the right tools necessary to send a clear message regarding appropriate behavior on the team, with the goal of enhancing the coach’s image as a positive role model for boys and thereby ensuring a positive team experience. While the message is gender specific, it is easily adapted to any team regardless of gender. Champions Of Character provides practical lessons designed to help audiences redirect their focus from a winning-is-everything attitude back to the truly valuable experiences and messages organized sports can provide, i.e. setting goals, problem solving, teamwork, etc. This program also works as a preventive measure for all involved in terms of setting the tone for appropriate behavior, and is designed for presentation to coaches, parents and players alike.

Objectives:

• To acquaint the audience with the motivation behind the creation of each program.
• Provide specific information regarding each programs’ message and its intended impact on relevant populations.
• Facilitate a thought process around the concept of incorporating such programs into audience members’ communities
