Managing Compassion Fatigue: Preventing Worker Burnout

This session will focus on the effects of the vicarious trauma which arises from providing professional care (ranging from physical disability to emotional distress, self medication and premature burnout) on worker performance. In addition to discussing the cognitive, emotional and behavioral symptoms which may arise as a result of prolonged professional care giving, several possible strategies will be offered with regards to self care, supervisory interventions, external supports and trauma recovery in order to prevent burnout and in some cases, destructive service delivery. Ethical issues regarding clinical judgement and worker burnout will also be addressed.
