Friday Course Descriptions
New Interventions for Suicidal Thinking Speaker(s): Dr. Bill Geis Time: Friday, July 12 at 1:30pm Length: 180 minutes This talk will focus on a new set of evidence-based interventions for reducing suicidal thinking that have been developed in recent years. These interventions include the 10 session cognitive-behavioral intervention developed by Dr. Aaron Beck and his associates, which has been demonstrated to reduce suicide by 50% over an 18 month period, and the Dialectical Behavior Therapy approach to suicide reduction created by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. Information will also be shared from a suicide intervention project in Jackson County, Missouri sponsored by the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City. In this project, information will be presented about different types of persons who become suicidal, different thinking patterns inherent in various pathways to a suicidal crisis, and cultural differences among persons experiencing suicidal demoralization. An emphasis will be placed on practical information and video examples and system changes that could improve clinical services. - - BACK TO FRIDAY'S CLASS LISTINGS- -
