The History and Applications of Animal-Assisted Therapies

This course is an introduction to the human-animal bond and its therapeutic applications. It will start with a definition of pet therapy and its history. It is designed both for professionals from a wide range of disciplines, and for volunteers, students and newcomers who wish to further their knowledge in this emerging, multi-disciplinary field. Class participants will examine how contact with animals can enhance human well-being when incorporated into health care, social services, psychology, psychiatry, education, allied health, therapy, and many more fields.

Objectives:

  •  To learn the global history of animal-assisted therapies
  •  To understand the benefits of applied animal therapies: psychological, physical and sociological
  • To learn the different types of applications of animals in therapeutic settings, including crisis interventions

There will be opportunities for hands on examples as well as interactions with the animals
