Speaker(s): Eva Marie Williams and Linda Brown

Time: Wednesday, July 11th at 2:45pm

In this 2-hour presentation, participants will learn to identify important components of a disaster plan, to analyze a disaster situation, and to recognize and understand post-disaster stress. The presenters will offer brief didactic instruction and the remainder of the class will be organized around activities designed to assist participants in applying skills to a simulated disaster.  Participants will also view an actual mass-casualty disaster situation, responding to video from the July 1981 walkway collapse at the Kansas City Hyatt Regency in which 114 people lost their lives and another 200+ were injured.  Participants will examine how a disaster plan could be applied to this actual situation, analyze the situation portrayed in the video, and observe and respond to statements and descriptions of post-traumatic stress experienced by first responders to this disaster.

Goals:

  • Identify components of a disaster plan
  • Analyze a disaster situation
  • Recognition and Understanding of post-disaster stress.
