Diagnosing Depression and Evaluating Suicide Risk Related to Trauma

One in ten Americans suffer from the medical illness we have come to know as depression. The worst outcome of depression is suicide. One in five of those afflicted with this condition will die by their own hand. Depression also takes a heavy toll on work performance, physical health and quality of life. If recognized, the illness can be effectively treated in most (70% -80%) cases.

Objectives:

  • Recognize the symptoms and signs of depression that distinguish it from ordinary sadness
  • Identify the barriers to recognition of the presence of depression related to trauma
  • Identify the risk factors for suicide related to depression and trauma
  • Discuss effective approaches to treatment of persons who suffer from depression related to trauma
  • Discuss effective interventions for persons at risk for suicide related to depression and trauma
